It is manufactured by reaction of good quality Potassium Carbonate solution with Hydrochloric Acid. The reaction is exothermic and steps need to be taken to control the escape of Acid fumes.
K2CO3 + 2HCl → 2KCl + H2O + CO2 and a lot of Heat.
A solution of Potassium Chloride is obtained. It is filtered and evaporated in multiple effect evaporators. The resultant concentrated liquor is then cooled to get crystals of Potassium Chloride.
Potassium Chloride so obtained is then dried in a rotary drier or in a muffle furnace to get Potassium Chloride or KCl.
In its pure state KCl is odorless. Potassium chloride has a white or colorless vitreous crystal, with a crystal structure that cleaves easily in three directions. KCl crystals are face-centered cubic. It is also commonly known as "Muriate of Potash" or MOP. MOP varies in color from pink or red to white depending on the mining and recovery process used. White potash, sometimes referred to as soluble potash, is usually higher in analysis and is used primarily for making liquid starter fertilizers. KCl is used in medicine, scientific applications, food processing and in judicial execution through lethal injection. KCl occurs naturally as the mineral sylvite and in combination with sodium chloride as sylvinite.
